The Firsts won the Division 2 Shock of the Day award by defeating Crumlin at The Welfare by 10 runs.
Richard Webb hit 8 fours in a 50 that rescued the home side from 17 for 3. Despite his efforts, by all accounts it was Yorkie legend Phil Midgley who carried the team with his 19 runs that on another day would have been worth at least 60 according to the Wakefield Wonder. From the moment Midgeley was dragged from the crease, Rogerstone fell apart like a ship without a rudder. They fell from 80 for 3 to 107 all out, but our hero was not done.
In the first over of the reply, Crumlin's opener Veall middle the ball with aplomb. As the crowd were rising to applaud a boundary, Midgley flew into the path of the tracer bullet and took the catch. "It wasn't a good catch" said Richard Webb. It was unbelievable and set the tone for the rest of the innings.
Luke Harris took 4 for 30 in 10 overs and Webb's trundlers picked up 2 wickets before Mo Akhtar claimed 2 for 4 to seal the game. The umpires will be appearing on Derek Picken's Christmas card list, but the real hero was Mighty Midgley.
After the game, Midgley modestly stated, "I carried the team and my back is killing", but it was worth it to make my captain proud and put a smile on Rich's face.
